As an art historian, I
have always had two aspirations – for museum work and for teaching. The
lucky opportunity to satisfy them both was my tenure at the State
Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, where for about twenty
years I held positions of a Senior Researcher and a Lecturer working
for the Educational and Oriental Departments. In the USA I worked for
the Springfield Art Museums, Mass. My teaching appointments included
Institute for Oriental Studies and the Baltic University (St.
Petersburg, Russia), NC State University (Raleigh, NC).
I specialize in Far
Eastern, Central Asian and Russian art. My research is focused on ukiyo-e prints with a particular emphasis on the
interpretation of historic subjects in this popular Japanese art form.
At RISD I teach courses on Japanese Prints, the Art in the Oases on the
Great Silk Road, and the Arts of Russia.
