Supplies: Photoshop Cs2 Classroom in a Book (ISBN: 0321321847), Illustrator CS2 Classroom in a Book (ISBN: 0321321839), and a USB Key 256MB+.

Class 1 - Morning: Introduction
Purpose: Go over course structure and requirements. View past students work. Discuss course materials. Discuss Lab, campus, parking etc.


Activities: A basic Introduction to the Macintosh Interface. Learn to navigate the network of the CE Lab. Learn to download and save documents locally and on the server. We will be exploring the desktop, pull down menus, the hard drive and the network. Create folder on server called: “yourname”. Complete student questionnaire.


Class 1 - Afternoon: Photoshop Introduction
Purpose: Introduction to Photoshop with an overview of tools and functions.
Activities: Photoshop intro tutorial. "A Quick Tour of Adobe PhotoShop" hand out.
Assignments: Finish The Tour Tutorial.
For Next Time: Bring a USB key, get your books, prepare any existing digital artwork and bring into class. Bring a few photographs to suitable to scan.

Class 2 - Morning: Contd. working with Selections | Scanning
Purpose: Group introduction of scanning and saving files. Beginning to use scanned files, and drawing tools. We will be scanning, saving, sizing and optimizing images. Optional window project Chapter 2)


Class 2 - Afternoon: Drawing, painting and creating collage in Photoshop
Purpose: Introduction to saving common file formats, layers, and common menu items, an overview of drawing tools, bitmapped graphics and working with imported images.
Activities: Working in layers and navigating common menu items. Start creating a letter size collage (300 DPI) utilizing scanned images, drawing, selection tools, and layers.
Assignments: Continue Letter sized project.

Class 3 - Morning: Making Photography in Photoshop
Purpose: General review of Photoshop tools. This is an introduction to Photoshop photographic editing tools and a full review of utilized tools.
Activities: This will be a guided but open activity; most of the common image adjustment tools will be introduced in a workshop style setting. We will be working with photographic and adjustment tools and settings. Optional restoration project (handout).


Class 3 - Afternoon: Continued Photoshop | Q&A | Review
Refining drawing techniques with Photoshop. Navigating using the CE Lab server and MAC interface. We will be using Photoshop tools and menus creatively and becoming familiar with differences between them.
Activities: Finish the Photoshop collage document; please print it out for the critique. -Open Lab Time.
For Next Time: Bring a few different logos/advertisements to recreate next class.

Class 4 - Morning: Introduction to Illustrator
Purpose: Introduction to Illustrator with an overview of tools and functions. Overview of vector graphics/ bitmap graphics.
Activities: “A Quick Tour of Adobe Illustrator” hand out.
Concepts: Overview of navigating Illustrator, creating vector graphics or “math graphics”, and understanding the difference between vector and bitmap graphics.
Skills: Students will be able to navigate and use illustrator and create basic vector shapes, text etc.


Class 4 – Afternoon: Creating shapes and Painting in Illustrator
Purpose: Review of Illustrator tools and further exploration of the shape tools including the pencil. We will also explore strokes and fills, transparencies and gradients.
Activities: Recreating a logo or advertisement using text and shape tools.
Skills: Utilization of a drawing program, with color fills and usage of Illustrator palettes. Students will be able to utilize Illustrator to create vector graphics drawings and control the appearance of shapes.
Assignments: Practice the skills and or finish the 2 projects.

Class 5 - Morning : Drawing in Illustrator Using the Pen Tool (Pear Assignment)
Purpose: Review of Illustrator tools and further exploration of the Illustrator Pen tool.
Activities: Illustrator CS2 Classroom in a Book: Lesson 4
Skills: Mastering the Pen tool.

Class 5 - Afternoon : Illustrator Caricature
Purpose: Review of Illustrator tools and further exploration of the Illustrator Pen tool.
Activities: Logo continued. Then begin scanning your portrait and use the “Place” command to get picture into a blank illustrator document. Trace the photograph using the pen tool and shape tools, and apply strokes and fills. Final product should be a full color caricature.
Concepts: Utilization of a drawing program, importing, drawing and creating within the program.
Assignments: Finish Tour assignment and finish Lesson 4, continue chariacture.
Reading: Illustrator CS2 Classroom in a Book chapters 5 and 6.


Class 6 - Morning: Caricature Part 2 with Cross Program Utilization

Purpose: Finish up the final Caricature assignment and to utilize the drag and drop compatibility between Illustrator and Photoshop.
Activities: Once Caricature is completed create a new Photoshop Document as well as a new Illustrator document. Create a piece of work between the two programs.
Skills: Understanding the uses for the two different programs with utilization of all tools.
Assignments: A complete project created with both Illustrator and Photoshop.


Class 6 - Afternoon: Final critique print lab with potluck.
Open Lab to finish up all work. Review all tools and complete projects.
Print all projects!! Presentation and critique of final projects.
